When I first began taking makeup classes in 2017, skin prep wasn’t discussed the way it is today.
The focus was coverage. Concealer. Foundation. Powder.
How to perfect, correct, and cover.
Over the years, my approach has completely evolved. And now, I’m known for something very different—light, skin-focused makeup that enhances rather than hides.
The importance of skin prep before makeup cannot be overstated, especially for your wedding day. And that’s exactly what I’m here to share with you today: Beautiful makeup doesn’t start with foundation. It starts with skin.
Hi! I’m Sophie, the founder for SM Beauty. I believe honesty is just as important as artistry. I know how overwhelming the wedding industry can be, which is exactly why I have curated a blog just for you. A space to share the ins and outs of SM Beauty, while also answering commonly asked questions during the inquiry process of searching for your own hair and makeup artist for the big day.

For the last two years, I’ve worked exclusively with brides.
I meet you early in the morning—at the beginning of one of the longest, most emotional days of your life.
You’re hugging people, taking photos, maybe feeling nervous, maybe overwhelmed. There’s movement, emotion and excitement all at the same time.
Your makeup needs to last through all of that. And no product—no matter how expensive or high-coverage can replace proper preparation.
If the skin underneath isn’t cared for, foundation can only do so much.

One thing I truly admire about my brides is the intention they put into their wedding skin preparation.
Many begin professional facial treatments 6–12 months before their wedding date.
Working with a skincare professional allows you to thoughtfully address concerns like:
Facials. Consistent skincare. Sometimes Botox. Spray tans. Treatments that help them feel confident.
That commitment shows. It allows me to work with the skin instead of against it. And that changes everything.
When I shifted my focus toward thoughtful skin prep, my brides started telling me:
That feedback confirmed what I already believed as an artist.
Skin prep is the real foundation.

Living and working in the city means we’re constantly exposed to stress, pollution, changing weather, and lack of sleep.
Our skin reflects that.
Some days it’s dry.
Other days it’s oily.
Some days it just needs extra care.
That’s why hydration and layering are essential, especially before long-wear bridal makeup.
My approach at SM Beauty is simple but intentional:
Each step builds balance while each layer supports the next.
When the skin is hydrated and calm, makeup sits beautifully. It looks natural instead of heavy. It moves with you instead of cracking or separating.
I work with minimal coverage but highly pigmented formulas. That means we don’t need thick layers, but instead precision.
These products perform best when the skin underneath is prepared—balanced, hydrated, and smooth.
When the base is right, everything else becomes effortless.
Makeup feels weightless.
It photographs beautifully.
And most importantly—it still feels like you.

Ideally, 6–12 months before your wedding date. This gives you time to work with a skincare professional to address concerns like acne, pigmentation, texture, dryness, or oiliness. Skin improvements take consistency—not quick fixes. If your wedding is sooner, don’t panic. Even a few months of focused care can make a visible difference.
Yes, but thoughtfully.
Regular facials leading up to your wedding can improve hydration, texture, and overall glow. However, avoid trying new aggressive treatments within the final month before your wedding day. Consistency is always better than last-minute experimentation.
Makeup can improve the appearance of uneven skin tone or blemishes, but it works best on healthy, hydrated skin. Heavy coverage isn’t the goal for bridal beauty. Natural, luminous skin is. Proper wedding skin prep allows us to use less product while achieving a more flawless finish.
On your wedding day, I assess your skin in real time.
Depending on what your skin needs that morning, hydration, balancing, soothing—I’ll layer lightweight, water-based products to create the ideal base. This ensures your makeup lasts beautifully and feels comfortable all day. Skin prep is always customized for each bride. See more about our process here.
This often happens when skin is dehydrated or not properly prepped. When the skin barrier isn’t balanced, foundation can cling to dry patches or break apart in oily areas. Thoughtful skin prep creates smoothness and longevity which is especially important for wedding photography.

If you’re searching for bridal hair and makeup in NYC that prioritizes skin health, longevity, and natural elegance, I’d be honored to support you.
